JEAUNAUX-ROBIN

Jeaunaux-Robin is imported by our friends at Valkyrie Selections. They sent us a holiday treat with various sample bottles and we immediately fell in love with the wines as well as the optimism and pride behind this unique corner of the Côte des Blancs. Within the first 2 minutes of our initial call with Clémence Jeaunaux-Robin, we knew we had found something special to represent.

Located in the tiny village of Talus-Saint-Prix in La Vallée du Petit Morin, Jeaunaux-Robin is a small estate that encapsulates what Small Victories believe in. The family domain was founded in 1964 by Michel and Marie-Claude Jeaunaux, and it is now run by the second generation: husband and wife Cyril and Clémence Jeaunaux-Robin. The estate is only 5.7 hectares and the vines are approximately 40 years of age (considered ancient by Champagne standards). The vineyards of Talus-Saint-Prix are unique due to their flint-rich, silex soil. While the village is located in the Côte des Blancs, it is predominantly planted to Pinot Meunier instead of Chardonnay! In addition to having distinctive soil types, Talus-Saint-Prix is cooler and more humid than other areas of the Côte des Blancs making it a unique micro-climate in a changing world.

When we asked Clémence what she and Cyril most wanted people to know about the winery, her immediate response was FARMING. Cyril and Clémence practice meticulous organic farming techniques. They converted the vineyards to certified organics in 2015 and have been thrilled to see that it led to a noticeable increase in the quality and unique identity of their fruit year after year. As their wines age, this dedication to the vineyard unfolds as elegance. It’s thrilling to work with a winery that is so clearly on its way up and is dedicated to its own definition of improvement.

As for production, all of their grapes are hand harvested and pressed at the winery in traditional basket presses. About 25% of their base wine is vinified in used French oak, and they do their best to avoid malolatic fermentation to preserve the minerality and freshness in the wine.

Talus-Saint-Prix is a unique place within the Champagne region, and Cyril and Clémence Jeaunaux-Robin are proud to bring the distinct flavors of their terroir to your glass.

The Wines

Le Talus de Saint Prix

“Le Talus ” means “the slope” referring to where Jeaunaux-Robin’s vineyards are planted within the small village of Saint Prix. The vines are an average age of 45 years and are planted on calcareous clay soils dotted with large pieces of flint.

Rosé La Dessus de la Cabane

The name of this bottling translates to “above the cabin”. At the top of the village where there once stood an old cabin is the vineyard plot where the Jaeaunaux-Robin family grows the Pinot Meunier that is harvested for the still red wine that goes into this delicious rosé.
